Returning to the first vertical row of letters, he separated them into words.

MEET POMPON NINE TONIGHT WITH CARS AND EQUIPMENT AS INSTRUCTED

So the Tomorrows met last Thursday night at a place or with someone called Pompon! What was this equipment they were to bring? Tools with which to break into the Musée Vattier?

“Why don’t you open the wine?”

He rose from the desk as Gabrielle returned from the bedroom, still carrying her handbag, her ash-blonde hair combed and fluffed. “Wine?”

“There’s always a bottle for the arriving guest. Compliments of le patron.” She gestured toward a serving table with a silver ice bucket.

“Le patron is most considerate.” Using a folded napkin, he lifted the bottle from the ice and recognized its label. “Blanc de blanc de Provence! He is also a man of taste.” Uncorking the wine. “Have you heard of a place or person called Pompon?”

“No. Is it important?”

“It’s either a place where the Tomorrow Men met last Thursday night or the name of some person they were meeting.”

“Where did you learn this?” Resting her handbag on a table.

“I’ve deciphered one of Madame Astra’s columns.” Pouring the wine. “Jacques Bardollot clipped it from Thursday’s paper. Found it in his studio and put it in my pocket.”

“It could, I suppose, be rue Pompon.” She took a glass of wine from him. “Although I’ve never heard of such a street.”

They drank, silently savoring the cool wine.

“Tonight, at least, you can rest here.” He glanced around the pleasant suite again. “Without fear of your friend in the Dauphine. You said you brought a copy of today’s paper?”

“I have it here.” She set down the wineglass and opened her handbag, bringing out a folded newspaper.

He took it from her and carried it to the desk. Put his wineglass aside as he sat down and opened the paper. Turned pages until he found Madame Astra’s column. Started with the first letter of the first word in the twelve forecasts. Writing them down, as before, in vertical columns.

“This is easy! Once you know how it’s done.”
