Returning to the first vertical row of letters, he separated them into words.
MEET POMPON NINE TONIGHT WITH CARS AND EQUIPMENT AS INSTRUCTED
So the Tomorrows met last Thursday night at a place or with someone called Pompon! What was this equipment they were to bring? Tools with which to break into the Musée Vattier?
âWhy donât you open the wine?â
He rose from the desk as Gabrielle returned from the bedroom, still carrying her handbag, her ash-blonde hair combed and fluffed. âWine?â
âThereâs always a bottle for the arriving guest. Compliments of le patron.â She gestured toward a serving table with a silver ice bucket.
âLe patron is most considerate.â Using a folded napkin, he lifted the bottle from the ice and recognized its label. âBlanc de blanc de Provence! He is also a man of taste.â Uncorking the wine. âHave you heard of a place or person called Pompon?â
âNo. Is it important?â
âItâs either a place where the Tomorrow Men met last Thursday night or the name of some person they were meeting.â
âWhere did you learn this?â Resting her handbag on a table.
âIâve deciphered one of Madame Astraâs columns.â Pouring the wine. âJacques Bardollot clipped it from Thursdayâs paper. Found it in his studio and put it in my pocket.â
âIt could, I suppose, be rue Pompon.â She took a glass of wine from him. âAlthough Iâve never heard of such a street.â
They drank, silently savoring the cool wine.
âTonight, at least, you can rest here.â He glanced around the pleasant suite again. âWithout fear of your friend in the Dauphine. You said you brought a copy of todayâs paper?â
âI have it here.â She set down the wineglass and opened her handbag, bringing out a folded newspaper.
He took it from her and carried it to the desk. Put his wineglass aside as he sat down and opened the paper. Turned pages until he found Madame Astraâs column. Started with the first letter of the first word in the twelve forecasts. Writing them down, as before, in vertical columns.
âThis is easy! Once you know how itâs done.â
